Silky Shark ( Carcharhinus falciformis )

The silky shark ( Carcharhinus falciformis ) belongs to the family of requiem sharks ( Carcharhinidae ).

Physique

The Silky up to 2 to 3.3 m tall, with gray, brown-gray to blackish color. The first dorsal fin starts behind the free end of the pectoral fin ( the most typical feature ).

Dissemination

The silky shark occurs worldwide in tropical and subtropical regions, in coastal and oceanic.

  • Westl. Atlantic: Massachusetts down to Brazil, Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean region.
  • Östl. Atlantic: Spain and down to Senegal.
  • Indian Ocean: Tanzania to Madagascar, the Maldives and Sri Lanka to around.
  • Red Sea.
  • Westl. Pacific: Thailand, Philippines, New Caledonia and Australia.
  • Östl. Pacific: Hawaii, southern California to Peru.
  • For several years, also isolated in the Mediterranean, probably migrated through the Strait of Gibraltar.

Food

This shark is grouped with the blue shark and the oceanic whitetip the most common large animals in the high seas. The preferred water depth is in the upper 500 m, where it hunts mainly fish, but also molluscs.
