Silopi

Silopi is a Turkish district town in the province of Şırnak Province in Southeastern Anatolia. The city has 81 949 inhabitants and the county 112 582 (as of 2011 ). Silopi is located in the south of the province and borders the countries of Syria ( 20 km) and Iraq ( 51 km). The majority of the population are Kurds.

Here is the only open border crossing with Iraq. Trading of crude oil and products of Kurdistan Autonomous Region runs through this border crossing. The pipeline Kirkuk -Ceyhan runs through Silopi.

The area was for a time under the rule of the Prince of Botan. One of the regents was Süleyman ( Kurdish acronym silo), the managed today Silopi. The plane in which lay the place was therefore called Silopi (silos level).
