Silvia Braslavsky

Elsa Silvia Braslavsky ( born April 5, 1942 in Buenos Aires, Argentina) is an Argentine Photo chemist. Braslavsky is a scientist in the field of photobiology, especially in experimental Photo optoacoustics. She was until her retirement in 2007 Professor at the Max Planck Institute for Radiation Chemistry (2003 renamed the Max Planck Institute for Bioinorganic Chemistry; 2012 renamed the Max Planck Institute for Chemical energy conversion). She was honored for her contribution to experimental Photo optoacoustics as well as the support of the international photo-chemical research, particularly in Argentina.

Life and work

Silvia Braslavsky is the daughter of the educationalist Berta Perelstein de Braslavsky and the biochemist Lázaro Braslavsky and the sister of Cecilia Braslavsky, also educationalist and former director of the International Bureau of Education of UNESCO. She has two daughters, the sociologist Paula - Irene Villa Braslavksy and Carolina Klockow.

Braslavsky studied chemistry at the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, but left after the " night of the long batons " in September 1966. While she was an assistant at the University of Chile in Santiago de Chile, she completed her doctorate at the University of Buenos Aires in 1969. Scientific positions at Penn State University (1969-1972), at the Universidad Nacional de Río Cuarto, Argentina (1972-1975), again Penn State (1975) and the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada ( 1975), she went in 1976 to the Max Planck Institute for Radiation Chemistry in Mülheim an der Ruhr, where she continued her research until her retirement in 2007. She was in the course of their research collaborations as a guest scientist and visiting professor, among others active in Spain, Israel, Canada, Cuba, United States, Brazil and Argentina.

Braslavsky clothed offices and functions in international scientific associations of chemistry. Since 2000 she has been Chairman of the IUPAC Committee for photochemistry. Since 2006 she has been a corresponding member of the CONICET in Argentina and also a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of INQUIMAE (Institute of Chemistry of materials, environment and energy ). She is currently chairman and chief organizer of the 16th International Conference in photobiology, which is in August 2014 to take place in Cordoba, Argentina. Since 2010 she has been an elected board member of the RCAA, the Association of Argentine scientists working in Germany.
