Simmondsin is a cyanogenic glycoside from the jojoba plant ( Simmondsia chinensis).

Effect

Simmondsin has been promoted in recent years as an appetite suppressant on the basis of experiments on rats, in which it has arrived at taking in a drastic reduction in food intake and weight. Cause is no taste impairment, but there is evidence of an effect on the vagus nerve. However, at the same time was also inhibited the formation of blood (slightly macrocytic, normochromic anemia). Although a direct toxic effect is not known but the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment warns against taking Simmondsin or jojobahaltigen appetite suppressants, since the effect is not fully understood.
