Simon de Colines

Simon de Colines (* in Gentilly near Paris or from Pont -de- Colines in the old Picardy; probably † 1546) was a French engraver and printer, renewed the typography in France in the Italian style in the 16th century.

Life

Simon de Colines ' exact origin is unknown; he either came from Gentilly near Paris or from Pont -de- Colines in the old Picardy. In the years 1520-1546 he worked in Paris as a printer. He had been an employee of Henri Estienne the Elder. (* 1470 ), whose partnership and heir he was. After Estienne's death in 1520 he took over his Offizin and married Estienne's widow Guyonne Viart, the former widow of Jean Higman Parisian printer.

Simon de Colines had begun as a form cutter of punches and printing types, as a printer, he developed as Geoffrey Tory and Claude Garamond a respected as a very elegant typeface with the aim to solve the typeface from its traditional, influenced by the pattern of medieval manuscripts restrictions. He was in France the Italian printing types popular, particularly their italics. Following the example of the Italian Aldus Manutius Simon de Colines brought out the texts of the ancient classics for the students in your pocket.
