Simon de Vlieger

Simon de Vlieger (* 1601 in Rotterdam, † 1653 in Weesp ) was a Dutch painter.

Life

He was from 1634 to 1640 in Delft and then worked in Amsterdam. He was one of the first marine painter of the Dutch school and has both sea storms and quiet Marines painted with individual vessels, entire fleets and naval battles. Particularly outstanding he is playing the action of sunlight on calm ocean surface. His pictures are numerous and can be found in galleries in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Copenhagen, St. Petersburg, Vienna, Budapest, Dresden, Berlin, Schwerin and other places. He has etched a number of landscapes.
