The airport was around 1938 as a military airfield of the Royal Air Force in operation. After the Royal Air Force was subtracted from the airport, this was up for consideration. 1958 therefore walked to the airport to return to the civilian airport. In the next decades structurally little happened at the airport, while passenger numbers rose steadily. This led to an airport, which technically outdated, overloaded, still strongly aligned to the time accordingly and not because of its military needs of the construction retarded and therefore was suboptimal usable. Therefore, one announced in 2009 extensive modernization and new building programs in order to make the Ndola International Airport customer-friendly.

The modernization program is supported by the national airport operator of Zambia, the National Airports Corporation Limited ( NACL ) and will cost about a trillion Zambian kwacha. It includes the new parking facilities for cars, hitting about 70 % of the budget to book and a basic terminal renovation, on which account for about the remaining 30% percent of the budget.

The airport is connected in passenger traffic from a number of airlines with many regional destinations. Use per month, more than 70,000 passengers used the airport.
