Life

In 1528 the title of Imperial Count, he was awarded and so raised the previous rule to a lip of about 140 Empire counties.

After the Reformation had initially enforced more and more in Lemgo, then in other cities since 1518, it came in 1530 to open conflict, as a Protestant hymns were sung during the Catholic Easter mass. Simon, who remained Catholic life, was incensed and spoke of " seditious [n ] farmers who want to tolerate no power over himself ." However, he was a vassal of two lords: the Bishop of Paderborn and the Lutheran since 1524 Hessian Landgrave Philip and therefore limited in its freedom of action. The approach to the Lutheran confession was also favored by the strong position of the cities, especially Lippstadt and Lemgo, over the sovereign. Philip of Hesse exhorted the citizens Lemgoer though, to make the sovereign satisfaction, yet the Lutheran Confessions spread off 1532 in the other cities further. When Simon V. searched 1533 support for military action against Lemgo, Philip grabbed a mediator. In the same year Lemgo took over the Braunschweig Church Order and became officially Lutheran.

Simon V. and Duke Johann III. of Cleves raided in 1535, the Evangelical become Lippstadt. The city capitulated to their rulers. Also in Lemgo fear grew in front of a military action, but it came not because of the ongoing mediation to Philip.
