Símun av Skarði [ sʊimʊn ɛaf skɛaɹɪ ] ( May 3, 1872 in Skarð, Faroe Islands, Tórshavn † 9 October 1942 ) was a Faroese teacher of history and languages ​​, together with Rasmus Rasmussen, he is the founder of the Community College of the Faroe Islands.

Símun av Skarði is also known as the poet of the national anthem of the Faroe Islands. He is one of the pioneers in the enforcement of the Faroese language in the Education of the Faroes.

Life

Símun is the son of Elsa (nee Matras Viðareiði ) and Johannes Johannessen from Skarð. From Skarð means in Faroese av Skarði and was then taken as a surname.

Símun av Skarði studied until 1896 at the Pedagogical University of the Faroe Islands and after three years in Denmark, where he met his compatriot Rasmus Rasmussen. Together they took the plan to establish a community college in the Faroe Islands according to Grundtvig's model.
