Sinope (mythology)

Sinope (Greek: Σινώπη ) was in Greek mythology the daughter of Asopus and the metope and a nymph of extraordinary beauty.

The Zeus fell in love with them, and pursued the shy Sinope by half the world, because it was light-footed and as soon as the god itself, but also her soon went out of the forces, and Zeus came up with them. Blinded by love, he promised to fulfill her every wish. Since Sinope said her greatest wish was to remain a virgin forever. And so it was, because the angry Zeus could not take back his promise.

At the place where Zeus caught the nymph, a city was founded, which bore the name of Sinope. Today, this city has the name of Sinop.
