Sir Charles Trevelyan, 3rd Baronet

Sir Charles Philips Trevelyan, 3rd Baronet (* October 28, 1870, † 24 January 1958) was a British nobleman and politician.

Life and work

Trevelyan was born in 1870 as the eldest son of Sir George Trevelyan, 2nd Baronet, and his wife Caroline Philipps. His youngest brother was the historian GM Trevelyan.

1899 Trevelyan was elected at a by-election for the constituency of Elland in Yorkshire in the House of Commons of the British Parliament. His seat in the House for Yorkshire he was up to the general election of December 1918 in which he unsuccessfully took as a result of the split in the Liberal Party into two wings to the former Prime Minister Asquith and his successor, David Lloyd George for the Independent Labour Party, hold.

1922 succeeded Trevelyan, as MP for the constituency of Newcastle Central, now back as a regular candidate of the Labour Party, to the House. After his electoral mandate was extended twice in the elections of 1924 and 1929, he resigned from the parliament from 1931.

1939 Trevelyan was, as well as Stafford Cripps and Aneurin Bevan, temporarily excluded from the Labour Party after he had publicly made ​​strong for the formation of a Popular Front, including the Communists against the German National Socialism.

Among the high offices, which reached Trevelyan, included, among others, the Office of the Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Education (1908-1914), the Office of the Minister of Education in the second MacDonald government ( June 1929-March 1931 ) and the office of Lord Lieutenant of Northumberland 1930 until 1949.

Family and descendants

From Trevelyan's marriage to Marie Katherine Bell, a daughter of Sir Thomas Bell, 2nd Baronet, were born six children, including the first-born Sir George Lowthian Trevelyan, whom he disinherited.
