Sir George Lewis, 1st Baronet

Sir George Henry Lewis, 1st Baronet (* April 21, 1833 in London, † December 7, 1911 in London) was a British lawyer, senior partner of the law firm of Lewis & Lewis and known lawyer in Sensation processes. He was also counsel of the Jewish Colonial Trust in London.

Life

Lewis was born in London and studied at University College London. From 1850, he was trained in the law firm of Lewis & Lewis, the ( 1804-1869 ) and an uncle belonged to his father James Graham Lewis for a lawyer. In 1856 he was admitted to the bar and became the co-owner of the firm. Made a name for Lewis when he sued the directors of Overend Gurney and bank because they would have to blame for the financial crisis in 1866. After the successful completion of the process, Lewis received several sensational mandates and played in Sensation processes of the late 19th century in England an important role, such as the Hatton Garden diamond robbery, the Royal Baccarat Scandal, in which the Prince of Wales was heard as a witness, and the Bravo case where the unsolved murder of a lawyer negotiated and which was later made ​​into a film and illuminated in several documentaries.

Lewis was married twice and had three children. In 1893 he was made a Knight Bachelor and was allowed to use the title Baronet Lewis of Portland Place from 1902.
