Sir James Hall, 4th Baronet

Sir James Hall ( born January 17, 1761 Dunglass, Scotland, † June 23, 1832 in Edinburgh, Scotland) was a Scottish geologist.

Hall studied at Cambridge University and the University of Edinburgh. Hall founded the Experimental Geology, by artificially in the laboratory produced different rock types. James Hall was an employee of James Hutton and how these followers of plutonism.

Hall traveled extensively around Europe to study geological formations of the Alps and the Etna. He noted the similarity of lava flows in Italy to those in Scotland.

Sir James Hall was 1812-1820 President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

The son of James Hall, Basil Hall, was a famous traveler and writer. The physician and president of the Royal Society, Sir John Pringle was a great-uncle of James Hall.
