Brisbane River
The Gateway Bridge is located in the center of the Gateway Motorway, goes around the eastern suburbs of Brisbane. It spans the Brisbane River in the vicinity of Moreton Bay.
Construction
The Gateway Bridge is a girder bridge made of prestressed concrete. It was opened after a construction period of six years on 11 January 1986. At this time it was the longest of its kind with a span of 260 meters and held the record for over 15 years. Overall, the bridge is 1630 m long. With 64.5 m, the Gateway Bridge is about as tall as a skyscraper 20stöckiges. The box girder is 15.2 m above the bridge pier and 12 meters wide on the bottom is still the largest prestressed concrete box girder of its kind in the apex of the bridge girders only 5.2 m high. Bruce Ramsey created the design concept of the bridge, the consulting engineer 's office was Mc Donald, Wagner & Priddle. The bridge owes its shape to the particular requirements of the other roads: the air traffic allowed a maximum height of 80 m above sea level, while the waterway beneath the bridge required a vertical clearance of 55 m. For the production of outdoor porch 150,000 tonnes of concrete, 9,900 tons of reinforcing steel and 2,500 t of prestressing steel were consumed. Due to time constraints has already started with the construction of the bridge before the plans were completed.
Use
The bridge has six lanes with a width of 21 m. It was financed by funds from the State Government of Queensland. Therefore, the use of the Gateway Bridge is chargeable. It is operated by Queensland Motorways, a state-owned company.
In early 2005, a major construction project on the Gateway Motorway has been announced. This includes the construction of a second bridge over the Brisbane River. The new bridge is downstream from the Gateway Bridge to be built and be an exact copy of the existing bridge. Also, this bridge is funded by toll revenues. It was completed in May of 2010 and is open to traffic since November 2010.
