Sir Thomas Barlow, 1st Baronet

Sir Thomas Barlow ( KCVO FRS FRCP ) (* November 4, 1845 in Edgworth, Lancashire, † 12 January 1945 ) was an English physician.

He and the German surgeon Julius Otto Ludwig Moeller (1819-1887) described the Moeller - Barlow 's disease ( rachitic Säuglingsskorbut ). This is an extremely rare today, caused by vitamin C deficiency disease, which leads to rachitisähnlichen bone deformities in infants and young children and is fatal without treatment.

Life

Barlow was the son of a wealthy cotton manufacturer James Barlow (1819-1887), he studied in Manchester and London. At University College London ( UCL) he reached the 1873 Bachelor of Medicine and graduated in 1874 with a Doctor of Medicine from. He continued his practical training at Children's Hospital Great Ormond Street Hospital. From 1895 to 1907 he was a professor at University College London, first of Pediatrics and later for clinical medicine.

Until her death, he was physician to Queen Victoria, then also for King Edward VII and King George V..

He was married to Ada Helen Dalmahoy since 1880, the couple had three sons and two daughters.

In 1902 he was raised to the baronet of Wimpole Street in St Marylebone in the County of London.
