Siri Hustvedt

Life

Hustvedt is the oldest of four daughters of Lloyd Merlyn Hustvedt (1922-2004), a professor of Norwegian and American history, and of those born in Norway Ester Vegan. She grew up bilingual. Since she was fourteen years old, she wanted to be a writer and wrote during their high school years poems. She studied English literature and did her PhD in 1986 at Columbia University.
