Sirtsi is a village (Estonian küla ) in the rural community Maidla ( Maidla vald ). It is located in Ida -Viru county (East Wierland ) in northeastern Estonia.

Description and History

The village has 7 inhabitants (as of 2000). It is a typical environment for the forest settlement. It was first mentioned in documents in 1492.

Moor of Sirtsi

For nature lovers, especially the Moor of Sirtsi ( Sirtsi soo ) is known. It covers an area of ​​5644 hectares. The area is since 1981 largely protected. Characteristic of the wetland are the numerous bog eyes. In the bog settle brown bears.

Even during the 19th century ran through the marsh is an important path, the so-called Virutee. He led from Central Estonia to Narva and on to St. Petersburg. He was abandoned until the construction of the railway line between the Estonian capital Tallinn and the Russian capital Saint Petersburg in the 1870s.

In the reserve there is also a large boulder. It has a diameter of 26.7 m.

In the Estonian mythology and in the vernacular, the Moor of Sirtsi is closely connected with stories about the Estonian legendary hero Kalevipoeg.
