Siručiai Palace

The Maironis Museum ( Lithuanian lietuvių Maironio literatūros muziejus ) in Kaunas is the central museum of literature in Lithuania. It collects and preserves the testimonies of Lithuanian literature from its beginnings to the present.

History

The museum was (1862-1932) founded to preserve the literary estate permanently in 1936 in the house of the Lithuanian national poet Maironis. Since 1941, the discounts other Lithuanian authors are collected. Meanwhile, the collection includes approximately 600 collections to individual authors.

The permanent exhibition is housed in a palace of the 18th century. The most important part is the 1992, the Jonas Mačiulis - Maironis memorial. In eight rooms, the former home of the poet and Catholic priest was reconstructed with original furniture and furnishings. Another permanent exhibition in the museum presents the history of Lithuanian literature, ranging from the oral narrative tradition about the origin of the Lithuanian national literature end of the 19th century, to the current literature in Lithuania today. In an exhibition on exile literature ( " Come away to return " ) are represented the literary activities of Lithuanian authors abroad from 1944 to today.

The museum also has several branches in Kaunas: a museum of children's literature, the Salomeja - Neris memorial with a permanent exhibition on the life and work of poet Salomeja Neris (1904-1945), the Juozas Tumas - Vaižgantas memorial in the former apartment of Juozas Tumas - Vaižgantas (1869-1933), as well as the Balys and Vanda Sruogos house a permanent exhibition on the life and work of the couple Sruoga (1896-1947), and finally the Juozas - Grušas Memorial, in the manuscripts, be preserved documents, publications and personal items of this writer ( 1901-1986 ).
