Maironis

Maironis, actually Jonas Mačiulis (. * 21 Oktoberjul / November 2 1862greg in Pasandravys at Raseiniai; . † June 28, 1932 in Kaunas) was Lithuanian national poet and Catholic theologian, professor of Lithuanian University ( Vytautas Magnus University, Kaunas).

Life

Jonas Mačiulis graduated from the school in Kaunas and went after the successful completion of the University of Kiev, to study literature, but returned in 1884, after only a year, back to Kaunas to enter a seminary. Later he became an active member of the Lithuanian national movement.

His work reflects the attachment to history, language, landscape and population of the country reflects.

His grave on the south wall of the Cathedral of Kaunas is a national memorial.

According to him, the Maironis Museum in Kaunas is named, the central Literature Museum of Lithuania. It collects and preserves the testimonies of Lithuanian literature from its beginnings to the present.
