Sisenand

Sisenand († March 12 636) was on 26 March 631 to 12 March 636 king of the Visigoths.

Sisenand undertook a successful rebellion against his predecessor Suinthila. He has been helped by an army of allied with him Frankish king Dagobert I.. Suinthila wanted to fight, but was at Zaragoza, before it came to battle, abandoned by his followers and was forced to abdicate. Immediately thereafter Sisenand was elected in Zaragoza king. Apparently, there was a widespread conspiracy against Suinthila nobility, who had made himself unpopular by an anti-aristocratic politics.

Sisenand let his takeover sanction by the 633 convened 4th Council of Toledo, which justified the change of ruler with alleged wrongdoings Suinthilas. The abdication Suinthilas was here shown as he had seen his error and then abdicated voluntarily. This avoided the bishops to establish, by explicit agreement to violent deposing of a king a precedent.

Sisenands reign was relatively quiet. He founded no dynasty; he probably had no throne follow -capable children.
