Background

The finale of the trilogy, filmed in both Italy and Austria, should be followed by a fourth film, but this never came about. Ernst Marischka planned a scenario jealousy between Sissi and the French Empress Eugènie. The film failed at the resistance Romy Schneider, who refused to play any longer Sissi.

The previous film, Sissi - The Young Empress, ended with the coronation of the Emperor and Empress of King and Queen of Hungary. This coronation took place in 1867. However, since the Lombardy and Veneto in 1859 and 1866 were lost for Austria - Hungary, plays this film before the end of the last film. In historical chronology was taken very little consideration in the movies.
