Sitones

Sithonen (also Sitonen, latin Sithones ) is a designation for certain early Germanic tribes in Northern Europe and Scandinavia. They are mentioned in Tacitus ' authored in the 1st century "Germania".

" The Suionen join the tribes of Sithonen. In general, the Suionen similar, they differ in that a woman has dominion: as deep as they are not only freedom, but even under the sunk bondage ".

Is curious that Tacitus Sithonen the one hand, to the north of Ästier ( later Prussia) localized, but then called the neighbors of Suionen, which were usually located in Scandinavia.

In the 6th century Jordanes mentioned in the " Getica " as a resident of Scandza (Scandinavia) including the Suehans ( Suionen ) and adjacent to them or related Suetidi. Whether the Suetidi can be equated with the Sithonen is controversial. As one of the most important sub- tribes of the Suetidi Jordanes mentioned the Dani ( the ancestors of the Danes ).
