Siuslaw River

The Siuslaw River is a river in Lane County in the U.S. state of Oregon.

It rises in the Oregon Coast Range and flows after 177 km in the Pacific Ocean.

Geography

The headwaters of the Siuslaw River spring west of Eugene, about eight kilometers west of Cottage Grove, another source stream is Lake Creek. Both streams originate above the Willamette Valley in the rain shadow of the Oregon Coast Range. The river flows west-northwest through the mountain range and ends at Florence in the Pacific Ocean.

Environment

The river valley was one of the most productive felling areas of Oregon, is so that the original virgin forest cut down and replaced by secondary forest. In the lower reaches of the Siuslaw River flows through the Siuslaw National Forest.

At the mouth of the river king and silver salmon are present, the river is also spawning habitat for rainbow trout.

Attractions and buildings

The 478 m long Siuslaw River Bridge, with the U.S. Highway 101 crosses the river at Florence, was built in 1936 by Conde McCullough. South of the river mouth are the Jessie M. Honeyman Memorial State Park and the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area.

Economy

The river is a popular fishing waters, where fish stocks have declined sharply in recent years. In Florence, there is a marina.
