Sjötorp

Sjötorp is a place ( tätort ) in the Swedish province of Västra Götaland County and the historic province of Västergötland. The village in the municipality of Mariestad is located about 20 kilometers north of Mariestad on the shores of the Vänern.

Geography

Sjötorp lies at the mouth of the Göta Canal in Lake Vänern. Three gates leading from the lake to the channel port on which the office of the Canal Company, a shipyard and repair shops are. In another five locks on the outskirts of the channel rises to 20 meters above the water level of Lake Vänern. In the old harbor warehouse, there is a visitor center and the canal museum, which is open in summer.

A few kilometers south of the town lies the nature reserve Surö.
