Scale (Greek Σκάλα ( f sg ) ) is a small town in Laconia, Greece, with a population of 3,026 ( 2011). Since 2011 it is the seat of the newly established municipality Evrotas, in which it forms a district of the same name with some surrounding places.

Administrative divisions

Scale of 1997-2010 was the center of a homonymous municipality, which merged in Evrotas 2011. The former districts of this community exist as villages continued. Scale is divided into the following municipal districts (in brackets the population from the 2001 census ):

History

Findings, which are located in the Archaeological Museum of Sparta, testify that the level of scale was inhabited by about 3000 BC. First settlers were the Achaeans, who were with the immigration of the Dorians to their helots. Other important finds from the Classical and Hellenistic period have been made in the vicinity of Vrontamas. The former inhabitants were among the Perioeci.

The region also has remarkable relics of the Byzantine period, such as the " Palaiomonastiro ". In scale are still the two Byzantine churches of the Transfiguration and of St. George present.

Economy

The economy of scale region is mainly based on agricultural products. The region is famous for its orange and olive groves. Organic farming has a higher than average importance - with growing tendency. Furthermore, tomatoes, beans, peppers and eggplants grown and exported.

In Grammousa, formerly Ambelochori (, vineyard village ') was called, large amounts of grapes are produced. The wine produced in the region enjoys a good reputation.

Ecology

Known as Trinisa middle beach of the Laconian Gulf belongs because of its shallow and clean water to the most important habitats for the spread in the Mediterranean loggerhead turtle Caretta caretta. The nests are recorded, protected with the help of bamboo trellis from predators and monitored regularly. At the Skalas - Gytheiou road have seven multilingual information panels out the turtles.
