The Skinner Reservoir (also Lake Skinner ) is a reservoir in Riverside County in the U.S. state of California. His dam was completed in 1973 and 1991 increased, whereby the lake holds 54.5 million m³ of water. Today, the reservoir provides Skinner also represents a popular recreation area

Geography

In community- free area in Riverside County, California located, the Skinner reservoir is located at an altitude of 448 m above sea level. The reservoir is located at the foot of Bachelor Mountain in the Auld Valley, 15 km north-east of Temecula.

Today, the Skinner reservoir holds up to 54.4 million cubic meters of water and extends to an area of 5.7 km ². It was created by damming the Tucalota Creeks as well as the two smaller streams Middle Creek and Schoolhouse Creek. From the Skinner reservoir flows out of the eye jammed Tucalota Creek. About the watercourses Santa Gertrudis Creek, Murrieta Creek and Santa Margarita River, the water eventually flows into the Pacific Ocean.

Economy

The Skinner reservoir is operated by the Riverside County Regional Park and Open - Space District and is leased to the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. The reservoir is filled via both the Colorado River Aqueduct and the California State Water Project water. A filter system delivers the treated water to 2.5 million people in Riverside County and San Diego County. The lake is named after Robert A. Skinner, the chief executive of the Metropolitan Water District from 1962 to 1967. This ended with the California Department of Water Resources a contract for water deliveries from Northern California.

Use as a recreation area

In addition to its purpose as a reservoir Skinner reservoir now serves as a recreation area. Activities include sailing, fishing, horse riding, hiking, and in another, nearby water swimming. The recreation area covers 5.7 km ² water and another 1.2 km ² land area. For vacationers 241 camping sites are available. Found on Skinner reservoir annually the events Temecula Valley Balloon & Wine Festival and the electric boat race solar Cup.

Ecology

The Skinner reservoir and its surrounding area are home to several endangered species such as the Braunaugenvireo ( Vireo bellii pusillis ) and the Empidonax traillii extimus from the tyrant flycatcher family.
