Slane Castle (Irish Caisleán Bhaile Shláine ) is a castle near the small Irish town of Slane in County Meath. The castle was built in a superior position over the valley of the River Boyne and is only a few kilometers downstream of the place where the famous Battle of the Boyne took place. Slane Castle is located approximately one mile west of the village of Slane.

History of the castle

The castle in its current neo-Gothic form dates from 1785 and was built under the reign of William Burton Conyngham, together with his nephew of renowned Irish architect James Gandon as James Wyatt and Fancis Johnston. Thomas Hopper was responsible for the designs of the Gothic ballroom. 1991, a devastating fire the entire eastern, river-facing part of the castle. The fire taught at great damage and it took a 10 - year renovation program to build the castle again. So Slane Castle is again available only since 2001. Today, the Castle of the Counts of Mount Charles, present owner Lord Henry Mountcharles.

The castle of Slane Castle is every August the scene of a large rock concert, the Slane Concert, at the well-known rock and pop musicians such as Bryan Adams, U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bruce Springsteen, Eminem, Robbie Williams or the Irish band Celtic Woman occur. The terrain, a natural amphitheater, offers up to 100,000 concertgoers place. Slane Castle in 1984, also used by the band U2 for the recordings of the album The Unforgettable Fire.
