SÅ‚awomir Rawicz

Sławomir Rawicz ( born September 1, 1915 in Pinsk, † April 5, 2004 in Nottingham ) was a Polish- British writer.

Life

As a Polish lieutenant Sławomir Rawicz was sentenced in 1939 by the Soviets to 25 years in prison camps. In the spring of 1941, he escaped with six other prisoners from the camp. They overcame the incredible range of 5000 kilometers through the Gobi Desert, Tibet and the Himalayas and finally reached in the early summer of 1942, India. His co- refugees have not yet been identified; also his statement is the only evidence of what is happening. His experiences on the run described Rawicz 1956 in the book The Long Walk. After the war he settled in Nottingham, where he lived until his death in 2004.
