SLC25A3

The mitochondrial phosphate transporter (PIC, PTP), the protein in the mitochondrial membrane of eukaryotes, which catalyzes the transportation of phosphate ion from the cytosol into the mitochondria. It is part of the respiratory chain and is one of the mitochondrial carriers. The transport equation is:

Mutations in the SLC25A3 gene are the cause of a rare inherited disorder in which the newborns die within a year of cardiomyopathies and hyperacidity. Probably plays PiC also the main role in the pathogenesis of reperfusion injury after ischemia.
