SLC5A6

The sodium-dependent multivitamin transporter ( SMVT ) ( gene: SLC5A6 ) is that protein in the cell membrane of animal cells, which facilitates the introduction of pantothenate, biotin and lipoate. It is a transport protein. Human SMVT is present in all tissues, and is therefore likely to be responsible for the intake of vitamins via the small intestine.

The transport equation is:

It is a symport with the possible solutes pantothenate, biotin and lipoate. Since SVMT also found in the blood -brain barrier, it is possible target for the pharmaceutical industry in order to optimize the absorption of drugs in the body.

The regulation of the expression of SVMT carried out at excess supply of biotin by chromatin remodeling at the locus of the SLC5A6 promoter by the Holocarboxysynthetase.
