Sleepy Eye is a village of 3,515 inhabitants located in Brown County in the U.S. state of Minnesota.

Geography

Sleepy Eye is located south of the geographic center of Minnesota on the banks of Sleepy Eye Lake. The village is about 138 kilometers south-west of Minneapolis and 179 km north-east of Sioux Falls. The city has an area of 5.1 km ², of which 0.7 km ² water surface.

History

Sleepy Eye was founded in 1872 on a railway track. The village got its name from the lake, which occupies the north and west of the village. This in turn was named after the Indian chief " Sleepy Eyes" ( Ish- Tak -Ha - Ba) in the late 1850s moved here with his tribe. The first white men settled from about 1860 in the present area. From 1883 to 1921 a flour mill attracted many people by Sleepy Eye. Sleepy Eye was also known for the TV series "Little House " with Michael Landon.
