Slim Whitman ( born January 20, 1924 in Tampa, Florida, † June 19, 2013 in Orange Park, Florida; Ottis Dewey Whitman real name, Jr.) was an American country singer, and the 1950s, especially in the 1960s with romantic ballads was successful.

Career

Born as the first son and second child of Dora and Ottis Dewey Whitman sr. he was one of the most successful, influential, but also lesser known singers in the history of country music. Whitman was an excellent yodeler. Yodeling he learned from the old Jimmie Rodgers records. His main interest, however, was not for the music, but the sport. A talented baseball player, he flirted with a professional career. When an accident at work in a meat packing factory, however he lost the middle finger of his left hand. During this time, around 1938, he met his future wife Geraldine ( Jerry ) Crist, whom he married in 1941. The handicap on his hand did not stop him from during his service with the U.S. Navy to learn to play guitar.

After the end of his military service, he was in a shipyard job and had the same first public appearances as a singer. He was discovered in 1948 by Colonel Tom Parker, who later became manager of Elvis Presley. Parker gave a recording contract with the RCA label, where he could make 1949 as "Slim Whitman " with the cowboy yodel song " I'm Casting My Lasso Towards the Sky" attention, but still grossed very unsuccessful singles.

Career

A larger audience Slim Whitman was known by regular appearances on the Louisiana Hayride - show. Since his record but still sold poorly, he lost his 1950 RCA contract. He switched to the independent label Imperial Records, where later with Love Song of the Waterfall succeeded little his first Top 10 hit. The final breakthrough came in 1952 with Indian Love Call. The example provided in high pitch and enriched with yodelling song deposits placed both in the country and in the Pophitparade and was certified gold.

The next plates were successful. The popularity of his ballads was due in large part to its proximity to pop music. Through his hit from 1955, Rose-Marie, who was able to hold in England for eleven weeks at the top of the top 10 and a record aufstellte, he was also known in Europe. This record was only decades later broken by Bryan Adams and his song " Everything I Do, I Do for You". In the 1960s and 1970s, he was successful in England than in his native America. Several times he was voted the best foreign star. The greatest hits in these years were More Than Yesterday (1966 ), Happy Streets (1968 ), Guess Who ( 1970) and Something Beautiful ( To Remember ) ( 1971).
