SÅ‚upia

BW

The Słupia ( [ su ː p ʲ a], German Stolpe ) is a 137 km long coastal river in Pomerania.

It rises 177 m n.p.m. Height in the Kashubian Switzerland and leads northwest. In Ustka ( German Stolpmünde ) the Słupia flows into the Baltic. Because of the steep slope in the upper reaches of the Słupia created numerous hydroelectric power plants. In the 19th century Słupia drove on the south side of Stolp on three large mills.

The derivation of the name is not clear: from Old Prussian " cuff ": post, post, pillar (see the Lithuanian river Stulpas ) or stlŭpŭ of Slavonic: pillar or stand. The name thus describes fish stand in the river, which is a device for fishing.

North of Bytów ( Buetow ) and south of Slupsk is the landscape park Stolpetal.
