SMA Engines

The Société de Motorisations Aéronautiques (short SMA) is a French company that deals with the manufacture of aircraft engines, especially diesel engines, busy. Since May 2005, it is part of the SAFRAN Group. The company is located since November 2005 in Bourges and Villa Roche.

The company was founded in 1997 by Socata ( belonging to EADS ) and Renault as Morane Renault. Both companies hold 50 % stake in the new company. It began with the development of three different diesel aircraft engines, all of which were given the prefix MR. In June 2000, SNECMA got in with a 33 % stake. The prefix of the engines changed to SR, SNECMA -Renault. It was decided to first develop the SMA SR305 for series production. This goal was 2002, with the approval of the engine achieved by the FAA.

However, the expected sales did not occur. The Société de Motorisations Aéronautiques therefore had to apply in February 2005 bankruptcy protection. In April SNECMA acquired 100 % of the shares and the company was incorporated in the SAFRAN Group.
