SME Server

The SME Server is a free Linux based on CentOS Small Business Server distribution for networks of small to medium size, which is an alternative to Zentyal. SME Server can - partly by additions of other providers - many server tasks from routing / gateway, security, network infrastructure, collaboration software and communications perceive. Most services are set up via a convenient web interface and configure. Therefore, no or only basic Linux knowledge is required for the usual settings and changes.

Since May 2012, the currently available stable SME Server 8.0 in 32 -bit and 64 -bit versions based on CentOS 5.8.

Network Infrastructure

The network infrastructure supports SME Server with the following products:

  • Installation and operation of the server in English, German, French and Italian
  • Print server for directly connected printer and external printer server
  • Mail server through POP3, IMAP4 and Webmail access on the client side, SMTP, SMTP AUTH and POP3 Multidrop pickup to the Internet
  • Apache web server with MySQL database, Python, PHP and Perl
  • File server via Samba (SMB, the "Windows Log" ) and NFS ( for Unix and other Linux systems )
  • Optional fax server ( can optionally be used as an answering machine )

Security

For data security ensure:

  • Spam and virus filter for mails, the latter also for local files

Router and gateway functions

SME Server can serve as a full-fledged router:

  • Optional gateway to the Internet via DSL ( PPPoE and other protocols )
