Smithson (crater)

Smithson is a small, bowl -shaped impact crater on the eastern edge of the lunar front side near the northeastern edge in the plane of Fecunditatis Mare, southwest of the crater Apollonius.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1976 after the British mineralogist and chemist James Smithson. Before that, he was designated as N Taruntius.
