Smuxi

Smuxi is a free, inspired by irssi and cross-platform IRC client whose target group is the GNOME user interface. He is the pioneer of the concept of separation of front-end and application core that manages the connection to the IRC servers. Both are united in a graphical application.

Architecture

Smuxi based on the client -server model: The core of the application can be executed on a server which is connected around the clock to the Internet. One or more clients can then be connected to the core, so that the connection to IRC networks is maintained while the clients were closed. Also allows access from any computer on the Smuxi server and receive as IRC messages any time. The combination of the applications screen and Irssi served as a model for this architecture.

It is also possible to operate the core of the application locally. In this case Smuxi acts like a normal IRC client, it is necessary no additional Managing the application core.

Functionalities

In contrast to the architecture of a bouncer Smuxi enables the display of the original time stamp and the display of the highlights that have been received since the separation of the frontend. In addition Smuxi enables the configuration and save the settings in the engine, which enables the configuration and must be made when connecting different frontends only once. Furthermore Smuxi supports colorizing of Nick with all channel and IRC networks across identical colors, as well as a caret mode, similar to how he is to be found in Firefox that allows you to navigate through the news using the keyboard. Besides the usual features, such as support for CTCP, channel search and nickname completion, the colors for font, background and highlighting can be changed. The client provides a graphical user interface that uses tabs can be reordered in the conversation window. Smuxi can connect to both a local and a remote engine Engine by using a drop-down menu ( in use irssi with similar screen). The first protocol in addition to the IRC protocol is already the Twitter protocol implemented. Likewise, the user highlights list has been implemented. So words can now be defined, which are highlighted, instead of just rows where the exact pitch was used. In addition, filters can be set individually. It is possible to filter out any, only some or all event messages as well as regular messages. This can even log or channel - specific happen

Planned features for the next release

For the next versions of Smuxi some other functionalities are planned. These include, inter alia, support for SSL and IPv6, as well as HTTP-/SOCKS-Proxy. So there should be a user-defined lists of words that are emphasized, instead of just rows where the exact pitch was used.

Some are text- based ( IRSSI ), some integrate well with instant messenger applications ( Pidgin ) while others are simply IRC clients through and through. Smuxi falls into the category Latter, and we're glad it does, Because it's a good little IRC client. "
