Snitz Edwards

Snitz Edwards ( * January 1, 1862 or January 1, 1868 in Budapest, † May 1, 1937 in Los Angeles, California ); actually Edward Neumann, was an American actor of Hungarian origin.

Life

Snitz Edwards was born in a Jewish household in Hungary. He emigrated to the USA and was from 1900 a theater actor on Broadway. He had 1900 in the musical comedy Little Red Riding Hood His first role. He played under the direction of Arthur Hammerstein and Charles Frohman at various Broadway theaters. Edwards succeeded in 1915, the entry into the film business problems. He was mostly occupied in a slightly comical supporting roles by its distinctive face. At the height of his career in the early 1920s he stood together with Barbara La Marr, Douglas Fairbanks sen., Wallace Reid, Lionel Barrymore, Ramon Novarro, Marion Davies and others, before the camera. Its still best-known film is probably sen together with Lon Chaney. and Mary Philbin in the box office hit The Phantom of the Opera. He also appeared in three films Buster Keaton in lead roles.

With the beginning of the sound era in 1927 his success fell sharply, as he was with his strong Hungarian accent not transmittable. He had his last small role in 1931 in William A. Wellman's crime drama The Public Enemy.
