History

The Social Liberal Party is a member of Liberal International and the Réseau africain libéral. Founded on 12 September 1988 under the name Socialist Party for Progress ( PSP), it changed its name in October 1993 to reflect its liberal orientation. After emerging from Mongi Khamassi (founder of the Green Party for Progress), the party counted only one representative in the Tunisian Chamber of Deputies.

The Social Liberals participated in all elections since 1989 in part. Its founder, Mounir Beji also ran in the presidential elections in Tunisia in 2004, but received only 0.79% of the vote. Following the extraordinary party congress from July 15, 2006 Mondher Thabet was elected General Secretary and successor of Beji. The members of the new Politburo are Mohamed Anis Lariani, Larbi Ben Ali, Abderrahmène Mlaouah, Jamaleddine Ben Yahia, Mourad Maatoug, Mohamed Chiheb Lariani, Tahar Kefi and Mohsen Oun Nabli. The latter was appointed on 1 February 2011 to the Secretary-General, in the same year he was replaced at the Extraordinary Congress of May 1 of Hosni Lahmar.
