Sodium is the sodium salt of the hydrogen bromide. It is a colorless solid with the formula NaBr.
Representation and extraction
Sodium bromide can be prepared by reaction of sodium hydroxide and hydrogen bromide:
Properties
Sodium bromide, sodium chloride is crystallized in the structure. The aqueous solution is slightly acidic. To a solution of 50 g of sodium per liter of water at 20 ° C has a pH of 5.4. Below 50.7 ° C crystallized from aqueous solution, a dihydrate.
The standard enthalpy of sodium is ΔHf0 = -360 kJ / mol.
Use
Sodium bromide can be used for the preparation of elemental bromine on the laboratory scale. This chlorine gas is passed in an aqueous solution of sodium bromide. This reaction can generally be used to detect soluble bromides.
From sodium bromide can be produced on a laboratory scale hydrogen bromide. For this purpose, concentrated phosphoric acid is added dropwise at a slightly elevated temperature on the solid.
It can do this, other acids, for example diluted sulfuric acid to be used, but in this case the reaction is often hard to control in order to generate a constant gas flow.
