Sodium is a chemical compound from the group of molybdates, which often occurs as a dihydrate, and decahydrate. It is the sodium salt of molybdic acid.

Production and representation

Sodium was first synthesized by hydration. A more well-known synthesis is the dissolution of molybdenum trioxide in sodium hydroxide solution at 50-70 ° C. The anhydrous salt is formed by heating at more than 130 ° C.

The preparation by fusion of molybdenum trioxide with sodium carbonate is possible.

Properties

Sodium is a white odorless solid and is hydrated, shiny, water-soluble crystals. With sodium borohydride it is reduced to a lower oxidation state molybdenum.

Use

Is sodium as an analytical reagent for alkaloids, used for the manufacture of pigments and used in medicine as an additive in foods, as well as the probe for producing other molybdenum compounds. In agriculture uses large amounts of fertilizer.
