Sodium salicylate is the sodium salt of salicylic acid. Sodium salicylate serves as a precursor for the synthesis of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA ).

Production and representation

Sodium salicylate is due to saturation of sodium phenolate with carbon dioxide, produced under high pressure and elevated temperature. This is the industrially introduced in 1844 Kolbe-Schmitt reaction.

Use

Sodium salicylate is used:

  • As anti-inflammatory and antipyretic ( properties similar to salicylic acid, but better tolerated, but worse tolerated than aspirin )
  • A keratolytic agent for topical application
  • As evidence for nitrate ions (formation of yellow-colored nitrosalicylic acid ).
  • As a preservative in the food industry
  • As propellants in whistling fireworks
  • As brightener for cyanide brass electrolytes
  • As a scintillator in the luminescence
