Sodium tellurite is an inorganic chemical compound of sodium from the group of Tellurite.

Production and representation

Sodium tellurite can be obtained by the reaction of tellurium dioxide with sodium carbonate under an inert atmosphere such as carbon dioxide.

It is also obtained from Kupfertellurid or silver telluride, which are obtained from ores in the electrowinning of copper. It thus serves as an intermediate for the preparation of tellurium.

Properties

Sodium tellurite is a white solid which is soluble in water. The solution is decomposed by carbon dioxide from the air, with the separation of tellurium dioxide. Sodium tellurite passes into Natriumtellurat when heated in air.
