Castle Sokolac

The Sokolac castle stands on a hill in Croatian town Brinje in Lika-Senj County and is one of the most important Gothic monuments in Croatia. Today, it is the ruin of a spur castle, which was first mentioned in 1411 and was owned by the noble family of Frankopans. From the local population it is simply called Gradina. Your Sokolac Croatian name in German means " falcon tower ".

History

The castle was built by Nikola IV Francopan as a new center of his family. All first Frankopan moved there ANZ Ivan VI. Francopan Brinjski one.

The castle is mentioned for the first time already in 1411. Your Chapel of St. Mary with its three storeys and the Gothic portal is the best preserved castle chapel in Croatia. In the Gothic vault of the crypt and on the first floor you will find the coat of arms of the families Francopan and Gorjanski. The Frankopans built next to the castle, a fortified settlement in the form of an irregular hexagon, four semi -circular towers and a bastion. In the parish church of St. Mary to find the grave of the plate Matija Čubranić from 1511.
