Sokolov Basin

The Sokolov basin, formerly Sokolov - Elbogen - Carlsbad Basin ( Czech Sokolovská pánev ) forms a geomorphological unit in the Czech Republic. It is located in north-west Bohemia in Sokolov ( Czech Sokolov ), has an area of 312 km ². The basin extends with an average width of eight kilometers along the southern Erzgebirgsfußes.

Geography

In the north, the Ore Mountains rises, to the northeast, the Egergraben connects. To the east it is bounded by the Doupov Mountains and to the south by the emperor forest. West joins the Kulm threshold to the Eger Basin. The highest point is 573 meters, the Dvorsky vrch ( Casper Mountain ) at Děpoltovice in Chodov pool, it follows the location on the Kulm threshold Drsný vrch ( Mariahilfberg ) with 570 meters.

The Sokolov basin is divided into four sub-units, the Kulm threshold ( Chlumský práh ), the Chodov pool ( Chodovská pánev ), the slag pool Werther ( Ostrovská pánev ) and the Zwodauer pool ( Svatavská pánev ).

Major river is the Eger, which flows through the basin from southwest to northeast. From the Erzgebirge, inter alia, the Zwodau, Rolava and Bystřice and from the Kaiserwald flow to the Teplá.

Economy

The Sokolov basin is the industrial center of Carlsbad Region. In the field store large lignite deposits which are mined in open pit mining. After the North Bohemian Basin, the Sokolov basin is the second largest lignite mining area in the Czech Republic. This led to the destruction of large parts of the natural landscape and the demolition of several villages. In Tisova are two lignite power plants. In the power plant Vřesová has worked since 2005, the largest air separation plant in the Czech Republic. There are also deposits of kaolin and mineral springs. At the southern edge of the basin is the spa town of Karlovy Vary.

Other cities in the Sokolov Basin are Chodov, Březova, Habartov, Hroznětín, Loket, Nova Role, Nové Saddleback, Ostrov and Sokolov.
