Solas is a Spanish film from the year 1999.

Action

Mary's father is seriously ill in hospital. Her mother came from his native village to be with him. The 35 - year-old Maria has been living in the city and is the mother of the only refuge. She moves in with her. Between the two women, however, is the despotic father, who even insulted his wife at the bedside and torments. Maria wanted to study, but this was prevented by the Father. Now she works as a cleaner in a hotel. She becomes pregnant from the relationship with the truck driver Juan. But Juan developed similar traits as her father and the relationship breaks down. While Mary takes refuge in alcohol to Maria's mother became friends with the old neighbors Vecino. Vecino is lonely and has a single point of reference his shepherd. The old woman from the village takes care of the old man and Vecino falls in his old age. But between the two is the sick husband in the hospital. When he is released from the hospital, the wife must return to the village with him. Vecino remains alone again. He now wants to be close to Maria. When she decides not to terminate her pregnancy, he offers itself as a grandfather. The child is born and Mary's parents die. Together with Vecino and their newborn daughter, she visits the grave of their parents.

Awards

The film participated in many film festivals and was thereby won several awards. Within the Panorama section of the film at the International Film Festival in Berlin was shown in 1999 and awarded the Audience Award. In 2000 the film in Spain was nominated for 11 Goya. Benito Zambrano received the award for best screenplay and for the best young director. Ana Fernández and Carlos Álvarez - Nóvoa received the awards for the best young actor. María Galiana received the award for Best Supporting Actress.
