Solid Edge

Solid Edge is a 2D/3D CAD system. For a flexible change of the model, the model data can be parameterized. The software is manufactured by Siemens PLM.

Description

Solid Edge is used as modeling kernel to Parasolid kernel from the same home. The first version of Solid Edge has been presented to the public in November 1995. The program is one of those CAD systems that have been developed directly for Microsoft Windows and have not been adopted as a port from another platform. The initial development comes from the company Intergraph. Up to version 4 of the ACIS modeling kernel from Spatial was used, which was replaced with the Parasolid kernel from Unigraphics Solutions Version 5.

Since version 18, simple finite element calculations can be run directly by means of the integrated module Femap Express. With the release of version Solid Edge ST2 (November 2009) is also an advanced FEA functionality available in the new module Solid Edge Simulation.

The distribution of the Software in Germany takes place exclusively through distributors of the manufacturer.

There is also a student version whose data format, however, is not compatible with the commercial version. So you can open data from a commercial version, but when you save the file is converted to the format of the student version and is no longer in a commercial version to read. With the release of ST4, Solid Edge, there is also a trial version available for download. This makes it possible to test Solid Edge for 45 days.

The Solid Edge ST5 version supported officially no Windows 8 and it could cause problems with the installation. Only with the current version of " Solid Edge ST6 " Windows 8 is supported.

The manufacturer UGS was acquired in early 2007 by Siemens, so that the software now comes from Siemens.

Modules

Solid Edge offers a variety of basic modules which provide for various tasks a designer tools:

  • Part ( Part Modeling, file extension, " par. " )
  • Sheet Metal ( sheet metal part modeling and execution; extensions: " psm. " )
  • Assembly (assemblies, construction in assembly, welding, file extension " asm ").
  • Weldment ( for welding environment; File Extension:. " Pwd " functions are also present in the assembly area )
  • Draft ( creating a technical drawing, file extension, ". Dft " )
  • Synchronous Technology (ST ) refers to a new kind of history loose part or assembly modeling. This methodology for creating and modifying currently available for Part, Sheet Metal and assembly available.

Other modules (depending on the license):

  • Engineering Reference ( Create and calculations of: gears, springs, cams and shafts)
  • FEMAP Express ( FEM calculations )
  • Standard parts ( glands)
  • Feature Recognizer ( feature recognition of foreign data from ST3 canceled due to better functioning with Synchronous Technology)
  • Virtual Studio (create rendered images )
  • Frame Design (design of frame structures )
  • Harness Design (design of wiring harnesses in assemblies )
  • Express route ( creating pipes or fittings )
  • Solid Edge Simulation (extended FEM calculation options, available from version ST2)

Updates:
