Somaliland constitutional referendum, 2001

The constitutional referendum in Somaliland on 31 May 2001 was a vote in de facto independent Somaliland ( northern Somalia) on the adoption of the Constitution of Somaliland.

According to official figures, with 1.18 million participated in approximately two thirds of the voters, of which 97.9 % accepted the Constitution. Observers doubted that participation and votes in proportion were actually so high, but it seems certain that a majority of the population supported the Constitution. This was seen as an indirect vote for the independence of Somaliland.

In Sool region, which is disputed between Somaliland and the neighboring Somali region of Puntland, the turnout was significantly lower and was about Las Anod in the district at 31%. Election observers of the U.S. Initiative and Referendum Institute expressed the presumption that those not voting, proclaimed it in this way their rejection of the independence and / or against President Muhammad Haji Ibrahim Egal. Overall, the vote was but nonviolent, free and fair.

The transitional government of Somalia described the referendum as "illegal".
