Sonpur (Hindi: सोनपुर, Sonepur ) is a city in the eastern Indian state of Bihar. It is located in Saran district and has 33 389 inhabitants ( 3,355 in 1901 ), of which 53.4 % men and 47.6 % women make. The literacy rate is about 60 % (Indian Average: 59.5 %), with 70 % in men and 48% in women.

In Sonpur there is also a division headquarters of the East Central Railway Division of Indian Railways. The station has one of the longest platforms in the world ( about 736 m long).

Sonpur is known for its 15 days ongoing animal market (originally mainly elephants and horses ), which was laid at the time of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb from Hajipur to the other side of the river Gandak after Sonpur. The market itself will be held on the banks of the south of the city the River Ganges, where pilgrims also use the market to perform at Hariharanath Mahadeo temple pujas, as the temple according to faith built by Lord Rama on his way to the court of King Janaka been.
