Subarnapur (also Sonepur, Sonepur Sonpur or ) is a city in the eastern Indian state of Odisha ( Orissa ). It lies at the mouth of the river Mahanadi and Tel in the capital of the district is the same.

Subarnapur has 17,535 inhabitants ( 2001), while there were only 8,887 in 1901. Of the population in 2001 were 53 % men and 47% women. The literacy rate is 74 % (Indian Average: 59.5 %) with 82 % in men and 65 % in women.

History

The Prince of Sambalpur Balabhadra Deva conquered the area around Subarnapur at the beginning of the 17th century from the Boudh - Prince Siddhabhanja Deva. Balabhadra Deva Deva's successor Madhukara transformed the area around Subarnapur in the vassal state Sonpur around and gave it to his second son Madan Gopal, who ruled it from 1640 as a principality of his own. The Principality remained until conversion into a orissanischen district on 1 January 1948.

  • Satya Narayan Bohidar (August 1, 1913 - December 31, 1980 ) - worked out of the Sambalpuri dialect of Oriyasprache by he created a dictionary, but also biographies and translations in Sambalpuri dialect wrote.
